Why does the insertion point of text jump around?

the flashing insertion point is where text should appear when a type key is
struck. however, i find that sometimes that flashing insertion point (or
line) jumps around on the page from time to time, such that when a key is
struck text will start appearing some place else on the page.

this is very annoying. how do i fix it? thank you.

If you have a laptop with a touchpad, avoid touching it or reduce the
sensitivity.

If you're using a desktop and you have a wheel mouse which you use to scroll
through a document, you must remember to click in the document before typing.
Otherwise Word thinks the cursor is back where you started scrolling!
