Why does SP2 block loading drivers?

I recently updated a computer from ME to XP with SP2. I did a clean install.
I ran the install program for the VIA Chipset drivers, but when I check in
Device Manager they are all still Microsoft Drivers dated 2001. After I
installed the Nvidia video card drivers I checked and they also said
Microsoft with a 2001 date. The computer is an older HP with a VIA KT133
Chipset and Vanta 16MB video card. Are these drivers now included with SP2?
Shouldn't I be able to install my own drivers regardless?

Any input greatly appreciated.

If you have Pro, you can change the driver update policy (allow older
drivers, uncertified/unsigned etc) using the administrative tools. I don't
know if it works for Home.
Try google for "xp driver update policy" or so.

Alifea,
How are you installing the Nvidia drivers? I've found you have to run the
setup program with them to get them to install correctly, rather than using
Windows driver wizard.

Yes, both the VIA chipset drivers and the Nvidia video card drivers were
installed with their installation program.

I cannot comment on performance because the machine works much better with
XP than it did with ME. But, the comparison is also based on the initial
install of XP and not after the dozens of applications are loaded. I was
just curious why after running the install program for the drivers they were
not updated and stayed as Microsoft, 2001.

I will try and look at the driver policy to see if that affected it. The
computer is no longer in my possession. Just updated it for a friend.

Thank you for your time.
