Why does SAVE AS changes the file name to a single letter?

Choosing the icon for new, I have created a new worksheet in a new workbook,
then I go to File and then Save As. I entered a file name "Sept 6th invoice"
and the file type is the default "Microsoft Excel Workbook". I click on Save
and it changes my filename to a single letter, such as "b" and saves it as
"b.xls"
If I open a file that has been saved previously with a file name "A_R as of
June 30th.xls" and trry to perform "Save As" with the same file name that I
opened, it does not work. I get a message telling me that the file "a.xls"
already exist and do I want to replace the existing file? If I answer "yes"
then the file is saved as "a.xls".
I have been using this Excel for years and it just started doing this. I
encountered the single letter file name when I downloaded a Microsoft
template. Something has changed and I have looked everywhere. I also
reinstalled my Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition software. It still
does not accept my file name and replaces the name with a single letter. Can
anyone help me?
