why does outlook shut down & restart when I delete an email?

When I delete an email message (or several at once) the computer "freezes"
for a few seconds and then Outlook says it has detected an error and needs to
close. This is driving me nuts!!!! Anyone else encountered this?
 
does it also do it if you hold shift and press the Del key to delete?

how often do you empty the deleted items folder?
 
I am also having this problem, I have tried holding shift and Del key with
same results, the deleted items folder is emptied when outlook closes.
