Why does my email automatically double space?

When I open my email it is set for double line spaces. I would like to set
it to single spacing when it is opened. I have to format every email to
single. How do I set the default spacing to single?
 
Are you using HTML? It should only double space when you hit Enter. That is
normal and makes it easier to read.
