Why does my "contacts" list reverse some first and last names?

Why does the contacts list change my first and last names against my design.
I enter "Smith, John" for "Display as" and "John Smith" as the "Name". All of
a sudden, the names are filed in reverse, and when I look for "Smith" under
"S", I find it under "J" as John Smith. This happens to somew but not all
contacts.
Help!!!!

Clarify your post.
There is no way set the default format for the "Display As" field.
To what fields and views are you actually referring?
