Your best course of action would be to do this:
- Reload the PC from scratch.
- Install a good virus scanner.
- Install a firewall (some virus scanners such as Trend Internet Security
have an integrated firewall).
- Connect to the Internet (this must come LAST!)

Any machine that has suffered a virus infection must be considered
compromised. Since you have had your PC for one week only, you would not
lose much by starting from scratch but you would gain a clean system.

just a sec, are you using a mail client (i.e. Outlook) or
webmail (i.e. through explorer)?

if you are using explorer it is normal to wait a bit
( the attachment might have to go to the server when you
click attach ).

Of course it is not normal for your system to freeze, so
i guess you have to do some system check routines anyway
( antivirus/adware) there a lot of posts in this newsgroup
about slow systems, and maybe provide extra info afterwards.

BTW just a note on newsgroup usage, mates:
* read existing before posting new messages.
* answer if a question solved the problem ( others will benifit
more if they know it worked and more replies will be send if
others know it didnt work)
* try to provide as much info as you can, while staying relative to
the subject.
* bla bla bla
I no good in giving advice on this issues, however these
things have to be sead, somewhere...

Hope this helps,
aagis.
