Why does it delete text as I type?

I am using Word 2003 and for some reason if I try to go back and edit text
later on, as I type in something, text following the cursor is deleted as I
type. I know this isn't a very technical description, but I'm not really sure
the best way to describe it. I don't know if there is a setting I can change
or what else to do. Please help!! Thanks!

Yes!!! Thank you so much for helping me fix this problem. I guess I didn't
realize that I touched that key in the first place to cause this whole mess.
