Why does History Trail return??

I have noticed on many PC's that even after removing the trail from History,
later it will return. I recall a fix that I did in Windows 2000, to fix this
but can't recall it. Does anyone remember what to do to keep the History from
reocurring. Example is going into the History folder and seeing the folder of
Today. After deleting all content and exiting it is gone. A day later you can
come back to the same area and may see the Today folder is current info
(which I understand) but you will also see Week of @@@@@ or week 2 or week 3
and the list goes on. Why does it come back and is there a way to correct
this?

IE Privacy Keeper has an option to clear history
mines set to do it when all IE windows close.
It just told me I ain't been nowhere today, and now I wonder where I've been
and what have I been doing - I can't remember & feel like I lost the whole
day and now I don't know what to fix for dinner.
