Why does a file titled "PERSONAL" open when I use Excel?

Every time I open an Excel document, a second document automatically opens
titled "PERSONAL.xls". The second document is usually a blank .xls document,
but sometimes includes data from a previously saved document. Other than
being annoying, I am concerned about the security of my documents since this
"PERSONAL" file pulls data from other documents. I am also concerned with my
files being corrupted with some sort of virus. Has anyone else experienced
this?

hi
the personal.xls workbook is what the title states. a personal workbook.
it is usually located in the xlstart folder and opens when excel opens. any
file in the xlstart folder will open when you start excel. it usually
contains personal user macros and in my case, reminder data as well as
personal macros.
in xp it is located at
C:\program files\microsoft office\office10\xlstart\
you can delete it if you wish but my questions is..
how did it suddenly get there without you knowing about it.
and are there macros in it.

This is the file many use to store macros. It is stored in XLSTART folder.
All files there automatically open when Excel starts.
You could (1) dleete the file, or (2) with it as the active workbook use
Windows | Hide. Next time it will still open but you will not be bothered by
it
best wishes

If you have no Personal.xls and create one by using the macro recorder to record
to Personal Macro Workbook, Excel will by default place the file in

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Try this in the Immediate Window.

MsgBox Application.StartupPath
