Why do word counts differ depending on the version of PowerPoint?

I'm trying to obtain a word count from a PowerPoint presentation. When I open
it in version 2002, Windows XP, and look in the statistics tab I get a word
count of 4,000 words. When the translator opens it in version 1997, he gets a
word count of 5,300 words - significant difference. Which word count is to be
trusted?

You might have to try this with a smaller file -- one you can actually
manually count the words on! -- as a test, but I wonder if PPT 97 counts the
words in the notes pages, but PPT 2002 doesn't?

Sorry, I don't have 97 ans 2002 loaded here to check.

There is only one note with 17 words in the presentation...

Hm. How about text in diagrams, charts, things like that?
