Why do I sometimes get a gap between my page header & my detaillines?

Hi

I have a number of reports with the identical layout, yet some have an
unsightly gap between the page header & the details and the others
don't. What causeth this?

It could be 'white space' from the bottom of the last detail or a group
footer on the previous page. Make sure that the detail and/or group footer's
KeepTogether property is set to True ('Yes' in the properties sheet).

Another thing to be aware of is that 'white space' above or below controls
does not shrink when the CanShrink property is True, only the controls. So
if you are shrinking Null controls make sure that the controls are vertically
contiguous with each other and with the top/bottom of the section, which will
usually mean they are taller than needs be to fit in a line of text.
Shrinking of controls is also prevented if there are any non-shrinking
controls alongside, including graphical elements such as lines or rectangles.

Finally, a page header or footer cannot shrink, so if the contents of the
header varies from page to page it cannot, unlike other sections, be made to
grow or shrink to accommodate the variations in the contents of controls in
the section. Where you need the contents to vary it can sometimes be better,
if you can achieve this with the data in question, to use a group header
rather than a page header and set its RepeatSection property to True, forcing
a new page at the end of the group.
