Why do I have to enter the cell (F2) for cell to calculate?

I have an extensive workbook that does not always calculate when I hit F9. I
often have to enter each cell by hitting F2, theb Ctrl+Shft+Entr in order for
cell to calculate. This is very cumbersome when there are thousands of cells
that contain formulas.

first try alt/shift/F9 (full recalculate)
If that doesn't do it, select one cell, then use Edit/Replace, and replace =
with =. This has the effect of reentering each formula.

Try rebuilding the dependency tree with CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+F9
