Why do I have multiple "mirror" copies of personal folders?

I have owned and upgraded Microsoft Office first with Office 4.0 -- then
Office 97 -- now Office 2003. I now have 6 copies of my personal folders in
my folder list (on the left). I cannot right click them to close them and I
cannot delete them. If I try to delete doing it folder by folder (within the
personal folders file), it deletes all 6 copies of the folder in each
personal folders file! Hence my reason for believing these are mirrored
copies. How do I get rid of these mirrored personal folders files and how on
earth did I end up with so many of them?

Thanks for your help :o)

Somehow your profile got damaged. Create a new profile (do not copy it);
Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles

To access your current pst-file in the new profile;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

To set it as the default delivery location;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts...-> button Next-> use the dropdownlist below
