Why do I get RED X's

When I receive incoming email most of the time there are RED X's on the email
somewhere and I can't tell what should be there. How do I remove the red X's
so I can view what ever should be there?

I hate those red "x"s, and I know that some times it is a setting in your
advanced security settings, but I have never really been able to get rid of
all of them. Sometimes, I get a pop bar at the top of the message telling me
that my system has blocked this image for security purposes (or something to
that effect) and that if I trust the source, I can click on that bar to get
the image to display. Sometimes it works, and sometimes after I click on it,
I still get the red X. I hope someone that understands this can clear it up
for both of us.
