why do i get { EMBED MSGraph \* MERGEFORMAT }instead of picture

When ever i place pict{ EMBED MSGraph \* MERGEFORMAT }ure or graph or chart
into a word document i get and cannot see it unless i look in print preview.
What am i doing wrong. It does not allow me to edit anything.
