why do I get a warning when unprotecting a workbook

I am working in an excel workbook that is protected. My boss and I share this
workbook. When I try to unprotect it I get a warning that says. " This action
will remove the workbook from shared use. The change history will be erased,
and other users who are editing this workbook will not be able to save their
changes, even if you share this workbook again."
I need to unprotect it to fix some other probles but not sure to whether or
not because I will want to share it with him again so that we both can make
changes. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
Thank You
