Why do I get a coding error when opening MSWord 2003 docs?

Frequently when I attempt to open a MSWord 2003 document, I get a File
Conversion dialog box that asks me to select the encoding that makes my
document readable. The choices are Windows (default) ((which always works))
MS-DOS or OTHER. Why am I getting this? Is there someway I can just get
Word to know the encoding and open the documents automatically?
 
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab. Clear
"Confirm conversion at Open." Click OK.
