Why do files multiply with ;001 and ;002 etc added to file name

The longer I edit a file, the more extra files show up in my folder with the
same file name plus ;001 or ;002 or ;003 etc. Is there something I can turn
off to make this stop happening?

Do you have somekind of sequential save, or similar add-in installed with
your powerpoint ?

Do they disappear when you quit PPT or restart Windows?

Do you have any add-ins loaded in PowerPoint?
