why do deleted files stay in the menu?

There are no 'files' in the menu - only links.
I
f you want to delete them all then set tools > options > general > recently
used files to 0, confirm the change, then change it back to the number it
was previously.

See also http://www.gmayor.com/clear_recently_used_file_list.htm

If you want to selectively delete, then it gets altogether more complicated,
but friend and fellow MVP Greg Maxey has done all the work - see

If you're referring to the MRU list at the end of the File menu, it lists
your Most Recently Used files even though you may have deleted them. You can
remove a file from this menu by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen and clicking on the
filename.

Thanks , but there is no "tools" tab in my Word pgm and in the "word
options " I've searched for Recently used files and can't find it anywhere.
is it called something else?

Word 2007 - Word Oprions > Advanced > Display > Show This number of Recent
Documents.
The macro solutions in the posted links also work.
