Why can't Word (2002) read a Works file?

If Works is a MS program (and a dumbed-down version of Word), why can't Word
read a Works file? I thought it could...

I tried executing the option to 'convert' stuff, but still ended up w/ junk...

If right-clicking and selecting "Open With", and choosing Word doesn't work,
I would try just copying and pasting the text as "Unformatted Text" into the
new document.

(Oops, I clicked the "answered" button too quick.) I will try
right-clicking, but can't paste the text because I don't have Works, and
therefore no access to the text.

Works is not a dumbed down version of Word. It is an entirely different
application with its own file format that is not directly compatible with
Word. Word comes with converters for recent versions of Works wps document
format. Older versions of Works require older converters which you can
download from my web site. Between them they should be able to open any
valid Works document.
