Why can't I sort my inbox by category?

I went through the effort of assigning categories to each of my inbox
messages to help me sort them when I needed to. However, when I finished and
went to sort by that column, it said it could not sort it! Why not? That is
ridiculous. It's just alphabetical and makes no sense why it can't be done.
But worse, I don't know how to replicate it so I can sort by category. I do
NOT want to group by since I want to be able to sort at any time by a variety
of options (received date, sender, category, etc.)

You can't, sorry. But you can set up a view that groups, and/or filters,
based on category.
