why cant i see pictures in word

This is a known problem and is usually attributed to a conflict with the
display driver. The possible solutions are to update the screen driver (or
use Windows own driver if available) or to reduce the hardware acceleration
to the display.

I meant display adapter as you managed to work out. It does seem to be the
recent ATI adapters that cause the most problems in this respect. Thanks for
the confirmation that yours fell into this group. The one consolation is
that ATI's support is good and a new driver will probably be along soon.
