Why can't I see a preview of a document in Word 2007?

I cannot see a preview of a document when I go to "Open" in Word 2007. In
Word 2003 I was able to click on a document and get a preview in the preview
pane. This doesn't happen in Word 2007. Why?
 
What operating system are you running on? My understanding is that under
Windows Vista, the preview function has been taken over by the OS.

In addition, it had occurred to me that the difference might be whether the
document was a .doc or .docx, but I can see previews of both. In all cases,
however, the previews I'm seeing are of documents saved without a "preview
picture." If your document was saved with a preview picture, there might be
