Why can't I publish my website in FrontPage?

G

Guest

I designed the entire site in FrontPage 2003. We have the domain that we
subscribed to from Hostway, and our hosting server is 1and1. 1and1 helped us
get an FTP account with the FAQs section and enable the FrontPage Extensions
on their server. We changed the nameservers for the domains [subdomain and
external]. The FTP Account connects. The folder with the site and all files
has been loaded to the remote server from the local server [not sure if I'm
using the right termonolgy there].

When I activated the FP extensions on the hosting server, it asked for a
user name and password. When I go into FP and open the site, I try to
publish it and I don't get anywhere. The FAQs on 1and1 don't help because
the example of FP they use is an older version than mine. I may be doing it
wrong for all I know.

The Remote Server type options in FP are as follows:
-FrontPage or SharePoint Services
-WebDAV
-FTP
-File System

I've been trying the FTP option and I insert the domain name in the Remote
web site location section. I have tried having the Use passive FTP box
checked and unchecked. Everytime I click OK after filling in the
information, a box pops up asking for end-user permission with a user name
and password. I give the user name and password that I gave when I activated
the FP Extensions on the hosting server. I click OK. It just clears the
password section and doesn't let me continue. When I click Cancel on the
user name box, it opens another box:
Unable to open 'ftp://[domain name here]'. Possible causes:
1. The FTP Server may be temporarily out of service.
2. If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be
incorrect.
3. An error may have occurred in the FTP server.

I have never published a site or anything of the such before. I don't
understand what half of the statements the programs make are referring to.
If anyone could explain or help me out, it would be greatly apreciated.

Contact your host for the password information. It is normally different
than the FTP credentials.

You don't use FTP if you are using the FrontPage extensions. Use the
FrontPage or SharePoint Services option (the first one) and the location is
http://www.yourdomain.com. (where yourdomain.com is your domain, obviously).
You have to have the http:// . A dialog box should come up asking for your
username and password, and then you should see the files on your remote site
on the right hand side of the screen.

Good luck,

Brenda

I tried your suggestion and it came back to me saying that the server didn't
support Windows SharePoint Services.

"Unable to open 'http://www.....com'/
Server error: The Web server at "http://www.....com" does not appear to have
Windows SharePoint Services installed.
Possible causes:
1. The web server may not have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
2. The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3. If you are connectiong through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be
incorrect.
4. An error may have occurred in the web server.

If this server does not support the FrontPage Server Extensions, FrontPage
may still be able to publish to the server via FTP or WebDAV. Please select
one of these options and try again."

I did figure out the FTP user name and password from the hosting server, but
FrontPage stopped in the middle of publishing on a CSS file and said that it
could not find a web server at the domain on port 21. It had finished with
several other files before this happened.

Why don't you use FTP with FrontPage Extensions?

Thanks. --moonstone

Using FTP to publish to a FrontPage extended web breaks the extensions that
are on the server. You NEED to publish using http.

If you don't have a sharepoint-enabled server, use the "Frontpage
Extensions" option in the remote site properties.

If you have been trying to upload by FTP, perhaps the extensions got
corrupted. Trying uninstalling them and then reinstalling them (you do this
through the control panel for your webhost). Then try uploading through
FrontPage again.

Also, if your domain name has not resolved yet, it probably won't work. You
are using the domain, correct? Not something temporary the webhost gave you?

It's a pain, but once it gets working, it works just fine... hang in there!

I just had a similar problem.
The solution was...

instead of selecting the site via 'My Network Places' I typed the full
address including id & password viz...
ftp://userid:p[email protected].

It accessed the site without problem.
