Why can't I change network printer name?

Ron

When I select properties for a printer on my peer to peer
metwork, the printer name is highlighted, but I cannot
edit it. What am I doing wrong? I'd like to change it's
name.

Are you trying to rename it on the computer that connects directly to
the printer or on a computer that accesses the printer over the
network?

I don't know what the problem is, but perhaps this will help: delete
the printer on both computers, re-install it, and re-share it.

Steve,
No worries not answering directly rather than the NG. I
am acessing the printer connected to my ME pc, thru my XP
pc and trying to rename it. The printer only appears in
the printer list as "printer3 on ME" when the pc's are
networked. So, to answer your question directly, I am
trying to rename the printer on a computer that accesses
the printer over the network.

I tried the same thing, Ron, and there's no Rename option for the
networked printer. It appears that Windows XP doesn't have the
ability to change the name by which it refers to a printer belonging
to another networked computer. I'm sorry that I can't give you better
news.

Thanks for the replies. What I find odd is the printer
is listed as HP960 on the ME pc when not networked, but
it shows up as printer3 on ME when networked, not HP960
on ME. There are about 5 printers listed when networked,
and I need to remember which one is the correct one when
printing, since the name isn't obvious. The rename was
just to help me print without going thru all the
available printers when I forget which is the one I want.

To rename a printer on the network, go to printers on the
pc the printer is installed on. Right click, go to
sharing and rename it.

Add Printer
Select Local Printer instead.
Create a new port with the network addy as the path. EX \\computername\printer.
Drivers should be in list if you have connected to it over the network before.
After that it lets you name it and even share it as your own.
It makes the computer think it is a local port.
