why are there a limited amount of functions available in each cel.

I was inserting a formula into a cell on one of my pages in excel and I could
not finish it because of the limited amount of functions you can enter into a
cell.
Why is it that there's a limited amount of functions you can enter and is
there anyway of getting around the problem?
