why are some incoming emails taking several hours to get to me?

I received an email at 9pm yesterday that the person sent at 9am. Another
person responded to the email shortly after the email was sent to several
people, but I didn't get the original email until about 12 hours after it
sent. Some other emails have taken a day before I get them.

Assuming you have pop3 mail, perhaps your ISP providers mail server?
Email is not an instant media, I beleive its regarded as a successful
transmission if received within 72 hours.

it would be a problem with your mail server or the route between it and the
senders.
