why am I getting è when I type / in word?

Somehow in word I am suddenly getting french characters like è when I type a
slash(/). Why can I not find how to change whatever setting this is?

No idea why you can't find out.

To fix it, however, type Alt-Shift (which will toggle through the
keyboards installed in your system). To remove the unwanted keyboards,
you go through Start > Control Panel > Regional & Language Options
(from there, it's different depending on XP vs. Vista).
