Why a Third Party RIP?

Many Epson professional printers accept a 'Third Party RIP'. I do not
understand that. What is the purpose of a third party RIP?

The same purpose that any 3rd party products offer. Features the Epson
RIP does not.

You're asking basic general questions without giving any information
about what you want to accomplish with this technology. People tend to
be far more receptive when they know what you're trying to accomplish.

Thank you. I was hoping to find a printer that can print as good as an
imagesetter, maybe close, yet I so far I found none that are close. I need
2400 dpi, many inkjets advertise high-dpi, yet the real numbers are lower.

imagesetter

The quality that comes from an imagesetter is partly because of the
technology (a fairly straightforward laser which turns on and off) but
mainly because it is used with photographic film rather than paper.

You will not be able to achieve your results as long as you print on
regular paper.

There aren't any printers that print a 2400 dpi dot as good as an
imagesetter.

You really need to find out if you need that quality to get the results
you want and confirm that you need a full 24" width for output.
