White opaque film?

Jim Land

I'm looking for a white opaque plastic film suitable for use in a b&w laser
printer. Letter-size, opaque or semi-opaque. Application: Temporary
outdoor signage, exposed to weather.

Usenet and Google searches turned up products by Labelon and Oce, but
unfortunately those brands are not available at local stores in the USA. I
inquired at Kinko's and got a blank stare.

Suggestions?

I tried various ways to do this without much luck. My final solution
was to buy poly report binding covers (basically slightly oversized
plastic sheets), which come in either black, clear, or frosted. Color
doesn't matter, the second part is to get 'waterproof laser labels',
and stick them to the plastic after printing, which I used to make
bumper stickers with. The problem is, locally, I could only find Avery
half-sheet labels, which required you to have to align them together
on the sheet after printing. The labels are /almost/ perfectly 4.25 x
11, just a tiny bit undersized. You can order full sheet waterproof
labels online, but you stated you don't want to have to do that.

My other solution was to use a laser transparency and tape or glue it
to the back of a 'Garage Sale' sign from Home Depot, some of which are
only one-sided and have a white back. Another easy solution was simply
to laser print on heavy paper and laminate it. This looked very lousy
for a bumper sticker, but probably won't be as bad for a door sign.

I've used a film made by Canson (I'm in Europe) in an ink jet then sprayed
with acrylic. The results look very good but you must be careful to seal the
edges or rain water gets between the acrylic and the film eventually.

Since the signs are temporary, have you thought about laminating them?

There are PP, PET and PVC synthetic paper for plastic however P
synthetic paper will become the main stream of printing industry an
meet environment protection. The problems for laser printing ar
toner can not be transferred completely during printing and hig
heating temperature (200 degree C) will melt done plastic and coatin
material. So, the technology is how to solve them by coatin
technology

The other serious issue is the performance of different type printer
has different toner transfer method, printing speed and toner’
characteristics. So, how to develop a common usage paper?

I used PP synthetic paper to develop it and had tested with HP CL
2550/2600n/2605/3500/4600/5500/9500/Indigo, EPSO
900/1100/1900/3000/4000/4100, Xerox DC 12/6060, Konica Minolta 245
etc. Sorry, I have no experience for B/W laser printer.

My paper color is white, thickness is 0.22mm and weight is 153gsm. O
course, weather proof is by nature due to tear proof and 100% wate
proof (even drop into water) of PP synthetic paper. Common lighting
halogen lighting or UV resistance are dependent on toner because th
paper surface is covered by toner after printing. It is completel
different philosophy with the technology of inkject printing that in
will sink into coating material and paper

The outdoor application of PP synthetic paper for laser printing is
niche market with great amount of requirement. If anybody ha
interest, I can offer A4 size free samples. My website i

Basically, recommend entry-level of HP CLJ 1600, 2600n or 2605 t

Sounds like a good idea, but if you cannot get the materials, you may
wish to consider using regular paper and laminating both sides with a
plastic laminate.
