My dad called and said his computer starts up, then reboots, then reboots,
then reboots add forever in the mix.

He didnt say that he gets any strange errors, just that it constantly
reboots. Which virus would he possibly have been infected with?

Thanks,

The same thing recently happened to me. After trying unsuccessfully to
determine the cause of the problemt, I finally decided to
disassemble/reassemble my PC. While I was unscrewing the power supply, I
noticed that a cockroach egg was stuck to the inner part of the back vent
and preventing the fan from moving (PC ventilation fans have very low
torque).

At that point, I realized that the PC was shutting down automatically to
prevent the power supply from overheating. I removed the cockroach egg and
when I turned on the machine it worked fine!

Sorry, there really isn't much information to go on.

What OS is he running? Does the computer boot up far
enough for the OS to be active, or does it not even make
it as far as the Power On Self Test (POST).

How computer savvy are you? Can you physically visit
the affected computer, or are you going to attempt to
troubleshoot remotely by telephone?

He's running Win XP, he says it boots up, then about 30 seconds later it
says it's going to shut down in 60 seconds.

I've asked him to bring it into town next week when he comes back up from
the desert and I'll have a look at it. Trying to troubleshoot a computer
with him is near impossible, it's just one of those things that all he knows
is AOL, and how to keep his stock charts uptodate, turn it on, turn it off,
nothing else.

So when I get it, I'll ask again.

This sounds like he is being hit with the exploit code from
the blaster worm (very likely). He will need the patch for
the vulnerability, and if he has the worm, that will have to
be removed as well.

Good luck.
