which to use - win 98 or 2000?

I've ju bought a laptop running Win 2000. But my printer,
CD burner etc were bought a few years ago for use with a
Mac, and now I see the software is only designed to be
installed on win98, not 2000.

I don't want to go and buy more hardware, so what's the
easiest way to get them working - replace Win 2000 with
win98 (how to I get Win98?); or chase down all the drivers
I need from the indiv suppliers (but as I used a Mac I
never registered the software for PC use, and the updates
I've seen on the Web can be for higher versions than I
actually own).

What advantage does Win2000 have over Win98? The PC will
primarily be used for word processing, email/internet,
some software for teachers (tends to be graphics) and the
occassional game

Win 2000 is MUCH better than 98. Find the drivers on the Internet for your
hardware.

I just love the fax program that comes with it, making all the faxes into
..tif files. Saves me lots of money on faxes, paper and ink because I don't
send them anymore. If I have something to fax someone, I just use my fax
machine to send it to my computer (free phone call) and then email it to the
client.

Yes, and I am finally getting used to the idea that I don't have to reboot
two or three times a day.

Win2k is also still supported by microsoft at some level... Win98 bugs are no
longer fixed, and soon even patches for even the most ugly security holes that
let anyone take over your computer at will - will no longer be published for
win98...
I would expect most of your hardware to have win2k drivers availiable on
the internet.
 
Windows 2000 gets my vote. Win98 was so crash prone, get so many programs
running, BSOD!!!! I bought Win2k and have since been very happy. I can leave
my computer on for days, weeks, and not have a crash. I've had this os for
almost 3 years now.
 
It's certainly true that Win2000 crashes much less often. The downside is
that one or two rather nice bits of older software no longer work the main
one being my husband's Encyclopedia Botanica with Monty Don (a database of
garden plants with loads of very cool pictures) and also my Sierra 3-D Ultra
Pinball.

That's a very tempting proposition, Cody. I have 2 hard drives. Could I put
Windows 98 on my secondary hard drive? Would it clash with Win2000?

You would have to set up a dual boot which I am still learning how to do. I
am sure, though, that there is someone on this board who knows how to do it.
Anyone?
