BING won't work on most W98 systems as it require usb 2.0 to recognise
usb drives.

Of course, it doesn't work from windows. You can burn the newest version
to a CD without buying it, boot it up, and look in its settings (cancel
the install and it goes into maintenance mode). In fact I think you have
to turn on USB 2 specifically. I'd look for you but I'm rendering a
video and can't reboot. Worth a try. It looks for USB when you go into
Partition Management.

In fact, I think I remember looking at a USB HD with BING on a K7.

None of these apps are necessary. You can do what you want with
Microsoft's tools. See my other post on this subject.

Ranish 2.44 will save only the first partition and not the rest though you can
play around the settings, like a demo.

You can use 2.4 to do your partitions but you must boot with DOS 7.1 so that
FAT32 can be seen.

You can also try fat32format.zip that can handle large partitions, Google for
it.

Can you please explain why dos 7.1 is needed?
Does ranish only work under dos or is there something specific about dos
7.1? Fdisk under win98se can be used to create 60gb fat 32 partitions, but
the bios will only recognize the first 120 (about)gb of the drive on this
older machine. so what advantage over fdisk does ranish have?

I don't need to handle large partitions, as I said in the OP,my plan is just
two 60gb partitions. I used fdisk, and the drive is working ok with two 60gb
partitions under 98se, but XP only recognizes one of these partitions and
sees the other as "raw". Apparently xp cannot see the drive properly when it
is plugged into a usb port, with adapter.

To see FAT32 partitions, the DOS under Win98 is almost DOS 7.1 and can see FAT32
