Hi all,

With 11GB C drive partition, and with Program Files installed on D drive,
and Email inbox and other personal data put on D drive too, the C drive is
still constantly running to 0MB which drives me crazy...

I need to make some space. Which files under Windows folder can be safely
deleted?

Thanks a lot

Try Disk Cleanup. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk
Cleanup. Do it on the C drive.

It will clear out things like the recycle bin and temporary internet files.
You should be able to delete all of them.

With only win on C, of 11gb, either you've never cleaned your sys or you
have some app writting files to C
If Disk Cleanup wont run, and it may not if there is less than 15% free
space
Start>Run> %temp%
Then see what space is taken up by files in the default temp folder, and
delete, perminently, these
In Internet Options, set temp files to 50mb
Check also your C folders to see if there is another temp folder, that may
have been created

Also...consider moving the swap file to another drive. Another partition on
the same drive will give you the same space, but (anecdotally) it harms
performance.

Have you enabled hibernation? That'll chew up C:\ space equal to the amount
of RAM in the system.

Sounds like you need to uninstall a couple apps though...

Also, you could turn off System Restore if it is being used.

Thanks a lot folks!

I've checked and here is my report:

1. I've already uninstalled all the unwanted applications. The remaining
ones are the ones that I have to keep;

2. The system restore is off;

3. The hibernation is on but I really want it. Is there a way to move its
space to another disk?

4. I've used CleanUp many many times, so I am sure the IE's cache is empty;
by the way, I use Firefox, I didn't find an option to set the path of its
cache?

5. The Windows Desktop Search eats a lot space, but I've moved its majority
chunk to another disk, but still I feel it still eats a lot of C space
automatically, any thoughts on how to further reduce its space?

6. It looks like I need a deep cleaning into the Windows folder. Please shed
more lights on me which folders under these directories are deletable?

Thanks

Oh yeah, I've done that to get XP to fit on one Ghost CD. Just turning it
off will remove all the previous points, and you can specify a small(er)
space if you want to leave it on. Default is something like 12% of your
drive.

Also, delete the dll driver cache at: c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ It's
460 MB of uncompressable data. This pretty much kills plug-and-play and XP's
self-healing, but the SFC command along with the XP CD will put it all back
if needed.

-who recalls deleting extra files from C:\DOS to gain space...

Youve got something else going on, I've run winxp on a much smaller C drive,
apps and other stuff on D and never has such problems.
Download something such as Tree Size to find out where your space is
consummed

Can you just tell me which folders can go?

You need to investigate what's taking up the space. There are utilities
that will show how much space is being used by each folder. DL mentioned
one.

By the way, why did you cross post to all those groups. In most cases must
pick one group, but at most one or two _applicable_ groups.
