Windows XP Pro SP2

Let's look at XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

As an example, it contains both
I386\comdtl32.dll
I386\comctl32.dl_

Which is more current i.e. the one we should use?

I386\sp2.cab contains DLLs and SYSs - not dl_ and sy_ files.
For example, I386\sp2.cab contains ntoskrnl.exe.
However, I386\ntoskrnl.ex_ is also in the service pack.
Which one should we use?
Why is ntoskrnl in two places in the service pack?

What about I386\driver.cab versus xxx.sy_ files?
Which one is used?

Which inf files are actually used?

There are also inf, dll, and sys files which appear in subfolders of I386.
Why are they not in I386\, itself?

I would appreciate any clarification. Thanks

The file extension ending in _ are compressed. You would have to expand them to a temp folder to see the version.

Your properties indicate you've a fully updated version of OE and IE which required XP sp2 to install thus the correct files were 'used' during XP sp2 installation.

Is there another reason beyond the answers already provided why you would question which file version is more current?

: But why are there both compressed and uncompressed versions of the same
: file?

The files with the _ are the from an install package. Why are you worried about them, they won't execute and have no effect on the operation of your computer.

I am trying to create a XPE bootable DVD.

What is confusing is that a file named say MyFile can be simultaneously
located in three separate locations.

SP2.cab as MyFile.dll
I386\MyFile.dl_
I386\MyFile.dll

Which is the most current version?

Thanks

They are all the same if looking at the downloadable and expanded sp2 executable or the sp2 cd. The Sp2 cd can still be ordered.

Maybe more information can be found with one of these links:
