Which Drive?

I'd avoid this one because it isnt fluid bearing and some of
the WD drives do develop a very irritating bearing whine.

It will be running in a removable HD rack. Does one run hotter?

The Seagate does run a bit hotter.

I'm really happy with my WD200GB and 2 WD80GB.

But I would still take the Seagate, 5 year warranty vs 1 year warranty.
In the past when I worked at a mid sized ISP, they always used Seagates
in servers.
Even knowing they ran hotter.

Is there a way of discerning a ball bearing drive from a fluid bearing drive
from the drive label itself?.

Not with WD, the ****wits dont even change the model number.

I once measured Maxtor, IBM/Hitachi, WD, and Seagate 7200 RPM HDs, all
probably 3-4 platter versions, while they layed flat on a table and
idled, and their aluminum castings all measured about 42C, except for
the 80GB Seagate, which was 46C. However the Seagate was a Barracuda
IV with foam and a metal cover over the circuit board, and removing the
cover made that drive run as cool as the others. All the newer 7200
RPM Seagates have no cover, so I'd expect them to run just as cool.
Also the chips on WD HDs may run hotter because they face the drive,
while all the other companies have the chips facing outward, and I've
found that even the slightest air flow over the chips can cool them
substantially (a Maxtor's hottest chips went from 68C to 53C when I
simply tilted it vertically).

Samsung's have a good rep for running cool and quiet.

Based on my own personal experience of a Seagate 120 GB drive that
should be hot and quiet rather than cool and quiet.

You're drawing conclusions about a Samsung from a Seagate?
