Which CPU to use

I've decided - for my new machine and to facilitate Vista,
the CPU I want will be a Intel Core 2 Duo Xeon with HyperThreading, running
at 3+ GHz.
If this CPU is available in Extreme version, then even better!

The standard Core 2 Duo CPU's will be out tomorrow at 12 Noon Pacific - be
sure to get yours!

Here is an article about the Core 2 Duo E6300 CPU with the Asus P5W DH
Motherboard:

Quite impressive, if you ask me.

And for my new machine, I want the Quad Core CPU that Intel says will be
available in Q4 of this year.
Meanwhile, my present computer is good enough for now. However, I would like
to be able to use BitLocker without having to enter in 48 digits every time
I turn on my computer. Fortunately I have gotten pretty good with the number
pad. Standby doesn't work well on my computer, It over heats and crashes. I
also lost 2 hard drives in one week due to over heating. I had 4 drives in a
row with not much air circulating around them. At least I no longer have to
work on developing my file management software.

I will be updating (replacing) my brothers Pentium II, 233 MHz machine to an
Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition. I will use it occasionally to test my 64 bit
code that I will be developing, hence spend the extra money so he won't
notice my code running as much. Also, the extreme edition should be easier
to find to buy.

Are the cores 32 or 64 bit?

64. It will be a pair of Core 2 Duo processors on the same die. Not quite as good as having all four cores on the same crossbar, but I will never know the difference with the kinds of tasks I run anyway. Power consumption and heat dissipation are liklier to be more interesting to me than how they get it done.

You realize that CPU costs over $1000 right?
You sure you want to go that far up in price?

That's true of my Core Duo machine. Intel says that they have lowered power
consumption by 40% in Core 2. Personally, I am growing fonder of AMD.

Wait for AMD's quad core. Should be close by the time we're ready for new
boxes in the spring.

I understand that once again AMD will have the more elegant design, with all
four cores on the same crossbar. A grand for a cpu every year is killing
me. Yikes! (Note, I didn't say I wouldn't, just Yikes!)

I am not allowed to add new toys, anymore. But I can replace to my hearts
content.

I'm pretty sure the "old" plasma screen will be developing a scratch, soon,
as 1080p is starting to ship in quantities...

I have a case that has seen many "replacement" parts. :)

I also have an arrangement with the next door neighbor to use his trash
collection area for suspicious looking cartons.

(You know you are addicted to new hardware when your wife says you have to
make a choice...and you know just how much you're going to miss her.)

"Well you know, honey, we could move that one into the bedroom. I mean, you
wouldn't want Biff and Buffy over and have them see it..."
