where's my network card???

I have a compaq pc with a built in network card (not PCI).
Although the l.e.d on the back is showing, device manager
(in XP) indicates that no NIC is installed, and scanning
for hardware can't find it either. How can i find out if
the card itself is faulty, or get xp to discover it?
(i've done the simple things like a reboot)
