Where should the backend be installed

Thanks in advance to anybody that can offer an opinion or advice.

Scenario
I have developed an application using Access 2003 that I intend to make
available for users to download from a web site. The installation file will
be created with Sagekey and will include Access 2007 Runtime.

Dilemma
Sagekey recommends installing the backend to the folder “C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data†which is a hidden folder.

My application enables users to create new backend files and to change which
backend they link to, using the common dialog box which can’t see the
“Application Data†folder because it’s hidden.

Sagekey will allow me to install my backend in a folder on the C: drive
(C:\MyProgFolder\Backend.mdb) but I’m sure I read somewhere that this is
considered to be bad practice.

Neither of the options you mention I would even consider for a number of
reasons. IMHO, I would either use the user's MyDocument and create a
sub-folder for your db or in the ProgramFiles within a sub-folder.

Thanks for your speedy response.

I have no experience of using Vista or Windows 7, but I thought these
operating systems were a bit picky about where files are placed.

Can you confirm that both of your suggestions will work with these operating
systems.

The location doesn't matter from a technical standpoint. The only thing to
consider is wether or not the location makes sense from a logical
standpoint. In other words, don't put the file in the 'My Pictures' folder.
We actually use the Documents folder under All Users.
