Where is the word count tool?

Old ones that don't always work were often on the old File menu (now
Office button menu), where properties moved to
Office Button=>Prepare=>Properties so (Alt, F, E, P) works to get you
to the 'basic' properties, but the old (Alt, F, I) will
now take you to the 'Office Center' (Word 2007 Options) dialog :)

You can re-instate the Word 2003 File Menu accelerator keys if you want. I
wrote some brief notes about how to do it:

Hi Tony,

Interesting. Word doesn't see these as keyboard shortcut custom assignments either (i.e. it doesn't list them from Office
Button=>Print=>Print
and selecting 'Key Assignments') and saves an 'attachedToolbars.bin' customization.xml part to Normal.dotm, even though the macro
was only in a specific document (and now the Office Button has a different keyboard shortcut in Word than its sister apps :) )

Hi Bob,

(i.e. it doesn't list them from Office

Accelerators were never considered shortcuts in that sense, so that's
consistent with 2003.
and saves an 'attachedToolbars.bin' customization.xml part to Normal.dotm,
even though the macro
was only in a specific document

Without setting a CustomizationContext that is, again, consistent with
earlier versions.
and now the Office Button has a different keyboard shortcut in Word than
its sister apps :)

There's only one app worth using <g>. More seriously, you can either (a)
change other apps in the same way, or (b) customize "File" with a different
legacy accelerator (although you would have to remember to use it).

I agree with these comments. Why isn't there a simple way to translate word
2003 functions to word 2007?? Some one really missed a very basic step in the
design process.

You have probably already found your answer to this, but just in case.........
click on the Review tab
look on the left section entitled Proofing
down the right side of the box you will see an icon ABC123 this is the
word count icon.
highlight the area in your document that you need a word count and then
click on the icon . A little dialog box should pop onto your screen with the
count for you.

to save yourself from searching out this tool each time, simply right click
on the icon and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar" . You will then see the
icon appear in your toolbar immediately above your document

It is not necessary to add the Word Count icon to the QAT since it is
already present (or potentially present) on the status bar. If you don't see
it there, right-click on the status bar and add it. The status bar will then
display the word count, and clicking on that will open the Word Count
dialog.

Where do I contact MSFT? These blogs did not help me. I still can not find
the word counter for word 2007

See Suzanne's replies in this thread

Right click the status bar at the bottom of the Word window and check 'Word
Count'. The Word count is displayed in the status bar.

The most relevant answer to most everyone's question about finding commands
in Word '07 is simple:
1. Right-click on the "HOME" tab.
2. Select "CUSTOMIZE QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR"
3. In the new window under "Choose Commands From:" drop down menu, select
"ALL COMMANDS"
4.You will see a list of all commands. Scroll down to whatever command you
have been looking for and highlight it. Click "ADD" button.
5. The command button will now reside on the top toolbar in Word '07.

NOTE: not all commands that were available in '03 are directly accessible in
'07. That is why you have to go to the "Customize Quick Access Toolbar"
operation.

I think the solution to everyone's issue with finding commands is this:

1. Right-click on the "HOME" tab.
2. Select "CUSTOMIZE QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR"
3. In the new window under "Choose Commands From:" drop down menu select
"ALL COMMANDS"
4.You will see a list of all commands. Scroll down to the command you want
to add and highlight it or double click.
5. Click "ADD" button.
6. Your command button will now reside on the top toolbar.

Note: there are some commands that are not directly accessible from the
standard toolbar menus.

In this specific instance, however, Word Count is already available on the
Status Bar.

It is in the status bar or under the review tab.
However i need help reenabling my status bar. I had it at the bottom of the
page and it disappeared. If someone knows how to get it back that would be
helpful.

The status bar in Word 2007 can't be turned off, so perhaps your Word window
is extending below the bottom of the screen? If it's in a restored (Normal)
window, what happens if you Maximize it?

I too have had considerable difficulty using Word Count to find the count
for a selection. Two observations:

* It has trouble with any text that was input by a second user and which I
then accepted via track changes.

* It has trouble with citations linked to the reference list. This may
relate to the first point.

My work-around: after you select the relevant text, copy and paste it into a
new document. The resulting word count should be accurate. It worked for me.

I know where it is - but how do I insert the [WORD COUNT: 250] on my typed
document?

There's no tool menu like there used to be. I need this desperately!! Thanks!

You could insert a DocProperty field
{ DOCPROPERTY Words }
But the field itself will add 1 to the word count and the use of 'Words: '
would add another, so if you did not wish to include the field in and its
associated text in the count, you could insert a combination of fields eg
{ ={ DOCPROPERTY Words } - 1 \# "'Words: '0" }
You can save this as an autotext or formatted autocorrect entry (for say
#wc) for ease of reinsertion, but always update the field after insertion.
Or you could insert the word count with a macro.
