Where is the .csv file?

In an attempt at backup, for future restore after reinstalling Windows, I
"exported" my WAB into a .csv file. However, I was not asked to designate a
location.
Surely I need to move this file to an external drive if it is to be of any
use to me in the future. Where can I find it?

Do a search for *.csv and see where it's located. Or, try to create it
again and see what folder is used.

Go to SEARCH.

Choose "All files and folders"

In the dialogue box, type *.csv (if you saved it as wab.csv, then type
that name in)

The C drive is the one you want, but it will already be selected, so
start your search and stop it when you are sure its location is in the
results window.

There will no doubt be more than one instance of your file. One might
be in the "recent" folder.

Be patient until you see what you think is the full list of hits.

Strangely, no .csv files were found. I did, however, find a file called
Address Book Saved in the Documents and Settings/Owner folder. The file type
is simply "File." Could that be it?

WinKey+E | Enter "*.csv" in the topmost search box (w/out the quote) | Click
on the Search Now button

Dunno. When you elect to save the address book are you supposed to
create a full name for it including the .csv part? If, so - and if
you didn't give a complete name - that might be it, but don't assume.

Do like one previous replier said to do: save it again and either note
where it's going, or direct it to your My Documents folder for easy
access.

It did offer me a chance to name it, but did not offer a location to direct
it to. I think I have found it in the Owner folder.
We have three "identities" in the WAB. Do I correctly assume that one
exported backup will include all three? Or should I do the same thing from
within each identitiy?

You've got me there.

It won't hurt to try. Name each file so you can easily distinguish
between them. Open the files in Notebook and see if they differ.

On second thought... each Identity (if it's a different logon user)
should have it's own .WAB.

Do a search as described, but search for amended files on the date you created
it. I narrows down the results.

There's the rub. All identities are under the same logon user [Owner].

All I can tell ya is to experiment.

Each saved .csv file can be viewed in notepad or any text editor to
see how they look.

Then all identities share a common Address Book.

So if I were to import the .WAB file into a newly-installed Windows, would I
still have the three distinct identities?
I have found that when exporting as a .csv, the resulting file contains only
the contacts from the "active" identity folder.

It's a little tricky.

WAB files:

Your 3 current identities (e.g., Identity1, Identity2, & Identity3) all share a common Address Book; i.e., the default Administrator Address Book that you'd see via...

Start | Run | (type in) wab /a

(See Command Line Switches section here: http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm)

If you currently have OE open to, e.g., Identity2, export its Address Book (Identity2.WAB), and then import it into a IdentityB's Address Book on another machine (i.e., IdentityB.WAB), it's main folder will display only Identity2's contacts...but those of Identity1 and Identity3 will be listed in the Shared folder.

If, however, you simply place a copy of Identity2.WAB on the new machine (i.e., don't import it into any identity), it will contain folders for Identity1, Identity2, and Identity3.

CSV files: Yes, WYSIWYG.

Wow! That's a lot of info, which I will study carefully. My concern is,
quite simply, how to keep from losing my Address Book if I have to reinstall
Windows or--more likely--I buy a new Vista computer and have to "migrate" my
Address Book.

It get's a little more tricky when you move to Vista as it doesn't have
Outlook Express or Windows Address Book. The default Mail Client in Vista
is called Windows Mail, which doesn't include the identities feature by
default, and Address Book is replaced by Contacts.

You can, however, import the data from a saved WAB file into your Vista
Contacts.

Import messages into Windows Mail from Outlook Express:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com:80/Windows/en-US/Help/53e5df86-5ffb-43cf-a0c8-164e3fe7994f1033.mspx

Probably the easiest way to import your OE data into Windows Mail in Vista
is to use the Easy Transfer wizard (similar to WinXP's FAST wizard):
