where is the bottom of my worksheet?

I open a spreadsheet with 50 rows of data and can scroll down to the bottom
of the 50 rows by dragging the slider of the scroll bar down to the bottom
of its bar.

Now I try to select a 1 column x 50 row section by dragging but overshoot
and mark 4000 rows (say!)
Now, even when I correct my mistake, my scroll bar range is 4000 rows and I
can no longer get to the bottomn of my 50 rows easily by using the slider.

How do I tell excel that the 'bottom' row is 50?

go to row 51. SHIFT + END + DownArrow to select all rows to bottom.

Edit>Delete>Entire rows.(do not just clear contents)

SAVE and CLOSE the workbook to reset the used range. Re-open.

Wow, amazing, I had no idea there were so many ways to do something that
seems so easy!
Thank you for the replies.

One has to ask however, why MS requires you to shut down and reopen an
application just to tell a data structure that there is nothing in it. i.e.
It is all to easy to accidentally move down to row 4000 as excel detects
that rows are empty and accelerates the cursor like mad when you reach
'empty' rows. So why does it not also recognise that these rows are empty
when I move back up and want the range of the scroll bar decreased to the
number of rows that are not empty?
