Where is my index?

I am trying to set up an index for the first time. I chose a name and marked
it. When I chose the next name, Word inserted the first one in my document.

I wanted to look at my index to see which was there and I don't know where
my index is stored.

Your index isn't "stored" anywhere -- it doesn't exist yet. All you
have is the marking for one or two entries.

You have to move the cursor to the place where you want the index to
appear, usually the end of the document, and insert the index by
clicking Insert > Reference > Index and Tables, and clicking the OK
button (in Word 2007, click References > Insert Index > OK).
