Where has Windows/XP hidden my SP2 & updates?

Hi guys n gals. Just wanting to know where they are, as they are not avail to
be 'uninstalled' from the control panel/uninstall etc...
I am trying, (with much frustration), to rectify a 'faulty/corrupted
recycle bin' since a reformat a few months ago.
Nothing works. Thought I might just be able to uninstall SP2 n go from
there, but not able to find them. Try diff tack, so to speak.... (MS hid
them, cause they used to be itemized in the uninstall window)????
Main trouble is that my recycle bin (as stated), is corrupted & i cannot
see anything that I delete. I have tried the cmd prompt, "cd recycled" to
try to find the *info/info2 file to delete, but 'IT' cannot even find the
'recycler/d' folder/file. ????? Cannot even delete the recycle bin folder.
(Says 'being used by other')?? Once again I will say, nothing works.
Guess I'll just have to do another reformat n re-install all my stuff again.
Thanks in adv for any suggestions.
Signed; Almost at wits end..... :D L.
XP home, SP2, 40gig HDD, 1gig RAM n Firefox 1.5.0.3 etc etc...

Not sure why you would feel that any SP2 files caused your problem but there
are dozens of articles about uninstalling SP2. I, personally, would try a
recycle bin repair from a reputable site like the following:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 64 on the right side. It's a little repair script so double click and
follow the on screen prompts to allow it to run. Post back if you need more.
TTFN.

in "add/remove programs" you have to click the check box for "show updates"

Many Thanks to 'The Unknown P' & 'Haggis', for your good suggestions but
they only work for a short time, eg; about 2 or 3 deletions, then it's back
to square 1. ie; nothing showing up in the recycle bin window when opened.
Haggis, I already have the box checked....ta.
Have done scandisk numerous times...= np with disk...
re; the SP2 question. I cannot install XP from my original disk,
(says..older version). & from MS, got info on how to do the repairs needed,
but guess what. They do not work...
Article ID: 875350 Article ID: 898594
It looked really good for a while after I'd done the 'KK' reg update as
per, but didn't last...
Any more suggestions? Please. :D L.

Many Thanks for your replies.
Haggis, I already have the box checked.....Ta.. They used to be
itemized, but not any more.??? Now all are 'collapsed' down to just 2
updates for MP10 etc... + a few other MS apps. (Defender/Verification etc).
The Unknown P, I've tried KK's reg update, but it only works for 2 or 3
times before it reverts back to 'nothing showing up in the recycle bin
window'.
The reason I went for the SP2 uninstall, was because I found an MS link
saying It was a way to solve my prob...
Article ID: 875350 & Article ID: 898594.
These do not work either...Cannot find the nec files to run....& will not
even look at my SP2 or XP disk.
Any more suggestions are more than welcome...Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the double post. MS doesn't like me for some reason. Kept timing
out with no notification of posting my reply..:P..:D L.

From all you have written and referenced, it's hard to tell if you've tried this
procedure yet:

Launch Windows Explorer and navigate to the %windir% (normally C:\Windows).
Click on Tools > Folder Options > View tab and then check "Show hidden files and
folders".

You should now be able to view all of the uninstall folders for your Windows
updates. Select the one titled, "$NtServicePackUninstall$. In its subfolder
you're find the executable file called, "spuninst.exe". Double click this file
to uninstall SP2.

This folder will not be available if your installation was done with a WinXP SP2
CD or a slipstreamed version of the same.

Good luck!

Thanks David.
Sorry, should have included that one as well... Cannot see/find the
required folder.
The Article, ID: 875350 refers to that procedure + a few other options
that I've tried.
I can't see what else to do. Any more ideas?
Thank you again for your assistance..:D L.
ps. The original SP2 was a D/L but has been re-loaded from CD since.

If that folder doesn't exist on your system then there's no easy way to
uninstall SP2.

Your best alternative would be to create a new installation CD containing the
SP2 updates. This can be created using a manual slipstreaming technique. Many
procedures for this can be found on the web but I recommend using a freeware
utility called AutoStreamer. It makes it quick, painless, and almost foolproof.

Here's a link for more info and to download:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/Autostreamer.shtml

Once you have created it, this CD contains the same OS version as your installed
OS version, except for all of the hotfixes and security patches issued since the
release of SP2.

Once again, many thanks David..
I will 'give it a burl'...so to speak.
I have found another poss solution as well. Can't have enough ammo eh!
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
Apparently you can do 'almost any repair' with it etc etc..... As a
relative newbie..tis all greek to me.
Hopefully, one of these will solve my damn recycle bin fault/corrupted file.
Thanks very much for your help with this. :2thumbs:
Regards, :D L.
ps. Will take tower to friends house on W/E. Fingers XXXXX'd..
pps. Will also let know results.

Here's more ammo for you, if you're heading in that direction.

As recommended by others, the BartPE boot disc is an excellent tool, but it's
not for the faint-of-heart in that it takes a lot of time to find/create/add and
test the additional plug-ins you may want or need.

I recommend the UBCD4WIN CD instead. This is a BartPE CD on steroids. It
utilizes the Bart compiler (PEBuilder) to generate the ISO image and then burns
the image to a CD and it has most of the freeware utilities and drivers you'll
need already established for you. Naturally, some updates are required for the
AV utilities.

See this link for more info and to download all requirements, including the
BartPE builder software. It's all free:

http://www.ubcd4win.com/

Note: One BartPE plug-in was left out of the UBCD4WIN list. It's called
"bootfix". That's a good one to add back before compiling. Read the htm file in
the BartPE plug-in folder for more details.

Good luck!

Thanks David.
The more the merrier, I always say... Much appreciated.
Regards, L. :D
ps. Apparently the latest version has all the nec plug-ins. :2thumbs:

If you're referring to the latest version of UBCD4WIN, it's the same version
that I have (v2.6). That being the case, you should find the Bootfix plug-in
missing. If so, simply copy it from the BartPE listing.

Here's what that plug-in does (very annoying without this feature):

PE Builder v3 plugin

Bootfix

If you enable this plugin, PE Builder will add the "Press any key to boot from
CD" option when booting from CD-Rom.
