Where has my free space gone?

J

Johny

I have windows XP
HD = 18.5Gb capacity
Used = 16.5Gb
Free = 2Gb

I have gone through all the foders under C:/ and they come to about 10Gb,
wheres the other 6GB gone.

I've emptied the bin, cache etc
It says it needs defragging but thats not going to give me back 6Gb
What can i do?

SequoiaView is an excellent free (and clean) utility to track down
mysterious missing drive space.

It provides a one window graphical representation of which files are taking
up how much space where on a drive, often tracking down files that Windows
is reluctant to reveal.

(It's kinda fun too) :)

If the blocksize is 16K and you have lots of little files of average
size, say 8K, then you are losing 8K per file. Defragging won't take
care of this unfortunately.

You could look at the properties of the folders. Each will report
"Size" and "Size on disk". The difference is where you are losing
space.

Cheers,

Cliff
