Where does TweakUI install?

I thought I had installed/run/used tweakUI numerous times before but this
one has me baffled

I have run unzipped the program into a temp directory and installed it about
fifteen times. Each time it asks me if I want to install it. Each time I
say YES. Each time nothing happens.

Each time I go to Control Panel and find it not there

Is there some way I am supposed to install this app in XP Pro or will it not
install in the OS for some reason? I downloaded the latest version from
the MS site although the dates on the four files seem to go back to 2000. Is
there a newer version or some reason why this version wont install from
control panel? I am logged in as Sony Valued Customer which I thought had
all administrator privileges (I have never had any installation problems
with any other program)

No, what can I be doing wrong: There is nothing in control panel or any
start group called Powertoys for Windows XP. Also nothing in Program Files
remotely called anything like that

Something tells me that you're trying to install the version
meant for Windows 98.

Go to this page and download the first instance of tweakui listed
on the right side of the page. It should be around 146 kb in
size.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Double click on the file you just downloaded and follow the
instructions. You should then be able to access TweakUI from the
Start Menu. An icon will not be created in Control Panel.

That is exactly where I downloaded it from and it installs files which date
back to 1999 and don't run: The other locations give the same setup file
which unzip to the same 4 files which say they are installing and then don't
do so

There must be something I am doing wrong: (There never was an earlier one
version on my system)

Again: It does create a start entry POWERTOyS aand a tweakUI entry in it but
all clicking on it does is to unzip those same 4 files which wont install!

Let's try the following:

Go to Start -> Control panel -> Add/Remove programs.
If TweakUi is listed click on the Change/Remove button to start
the uninstall process.
Next, make sure that the Start menu entries are deleted.

Then, search on your hard drive for files named tweakui.exe.
Delete all these files. I think you're going to find one that has
an icon that looks like a vise grip holding a folder. If it's
located in C:\Windows\System32 it could be the source of your
problem. It's probably the source of those 4 files you've
mentioned.

Are these the 4 files you're talking about?
tweakui.inf
tweakui.cpl
tweakui.cnt
tweakui.hlp
Those are the files used to install the Win98 version of TweakUi.
It probably wouldn't hurt to find them and delete them as well.
Do a search for tweakui.* and see what shows up. I'd delete any
files that are found.

Now go back and run TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe and see what
happens.

The new version for XP does not place an icon(shortcut) in control
panel, however there is a reg edit to place it there, you will find it at the
very bottom of this page.

Yes, that did it although curiously there wasnt a tweakui.exe.in
C:\Windows\System32 it could be the source of your
problem.

tweakui.inf
tweakui.cpl
tweakui.cnt
tweakui.hlp

Those were they
