Where does Excel keep macros?

I

Ian Crorie

I've a user whose PC I've just upgraded from Win98 to XP (after
replacing a faulty disc). She had some Excel macros written by
someone else who we can no longer contact (when she started up Excel
she always got some message about "loading macros").

I have her old disc on backup but have no idea where to look for these
macros (or even if they are in fact recoverable). Can anyone help
me? Thanks in advance.

1. Macros can be stored in a workbook so they are available only for that
workbook. These could be in general modules, worksheet modules or
Thisworkbook Module.

2. They can be stored in a Personal Macro Workbook that is placed in the
XLSTART folder so they are available for all open workbooks.

3. They can be stored in a workbook which has been saved as an Add-in with
the extension *.XLA

I would do a search on her old disk backup for *.xls files to see if she has a
PERSONAL.XLS file or similar in the XLSTART folder.. If so, copy that over to
new setup.

Also look for *.XLA files. Could be a third-party Add-in.
