I recently converted from WIN 98SE which on the System utility displayed a
resources available in %. This was a good indicator of free memory and as I
had a memory leak somewhere was a method to know when i patched it or needed
to reboot. What is the equivalent memory resources display in WIN XP?

Right click your clock and select Task Manager from the popup menu. You find equivalent information on the Performance tab.

DOS based Windows 98 "resources" are small files (64 KB)
that keep track of programs and files open. NT based XP has
the entire system memory available to keep track of such OS
details.

No it wasn't. System Resources had nothing to do with free memory
in general, but with how much of particular structures (64K
stacks) were available.

There is no equivalent. Windows XP doesn't work that way and
doesn't use that structure.

That's one of XP's many improvements over 9X. There are no System
Resources to run out of or to be concerned with.

It wasn't. It relates to use of a specific small 16 bit structure in
Win98 which just plain does not exist in XP. Do not worry about 'free'
memory. XP attempts to keep all of memory in some sort of use at all
times, even if only trivially, and will drop trivial uses the instant a
serious need arises. Programs that claim to show 'free' or
'available' memory are showing the part for which there is currently no
conceivable use. Avoid programs that purport to 'manage' or 'free up'
memory so as to give a purely cosmetic feel good: they usually have
awkward side effects

AND it will be very misleading if taken at face value. Especially the
'Available' Physical memory which gives quite the wrong impression
