Where did the icon for my sound go?

I just opened a link that had music and went to the bottom of my screen to
click on the icon to control the sound and the icon is gone. How did that
happen and more important how do I get it back.
I just don't understand what is happening to my system all of a sudden. All
of these strange things started yesterday and it's driving me crazy.
In addition to things disappearing from the task bar the link to 'Internet
Explorer' in the list of programs available when you click on start is not
functioning any longer. When I click on that the internet options opens
instead of the browser. Crazy things are happening to my system and I don't
know what to do or what's causing it. HELP please.

Tell us about the status of your anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall
utilities.

I thank you for your reply but I went into my control panel and clicked on
the sound link and was able to put the control back on my task bar.
Now to answer your question: I have spybot, ad-ware, and my anti virus is
the free version of AVG which updates every day.
I was able to solve the problem of my sound icon missing from my task bar
and also the internet link in the list of programs by doing a little
investigating on my own but I have no idea what is causing these changes to
happen to my system. I'm not new to computers since I've owned them for about
17 years now starting when DOS was used but neither am I knowledgable enough
to know what's causing these problems or know what to do to fix them. I seem
to panic when something strange happens.
Thanks for your help.

Linda, i had the icon problem a year or so ago, everyday i would lose
more icons. if i remember right something got corrupted in the mouse
point32 files. After countless tries to fix i was advised to reinstall
XP and never download any mouse drivers, ie logitech or microsoft
etc.,, so i did that and have never had a issue again. be thankfull you
can still backup ur files,etc..

Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are good but they require you to update the latest file
definitions and perform your own scans. I've found the Microsoft AntiSpyware
utility to be just as effective and it's proactive, obtaining its own updates
and performing its own scans. This is still classified as a beta app but it's
very stable and still free. You can obtain the latest version (beta1) here (See
Popular Downloads):

http://www.microsoft.com/

Another proactive defense method is tweak the security settings in IE's browser
by populating the Restricted Sites Zone with listing of known offenders. See
this link for more info:

I should have include this in my last response:

What about a firewall?

If you have none, I'd recommend Zone Alarm. The free version does an excellent
job. See this link for more details:
